IBM Workplace Solutions
- Why Workplace? Why i?
By John Taylor, SystemiNetwork.com, November 1, 2006Before you can answer "why Workplace" and "why i," you must understand "what" Workplace is. Suppose you want an environment written on an open, Java-based platform that works with your System i. You want browser-based, disconnected, and hand-held versions. You want a rich SOA-based development environment that builds on your current tools and applications and lets you develop one format for all client types. You want a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model that lets you control application deployment and client updates from a central server. You want all user applications brought together in a single portal-based interface but presented only to the appropriate users on a role basis. You want to tackle the problem of keeping track of information rather than relying on Microsoft Office and e-mail as file stores and to run the environment on any server platform. Oh, and you want to have it for a low enough price per user that all your employees can participate.
